In the early 90s I chaired a fine arts auction to help support The Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN) and became aware of the fact that police were harassing street vendors and confiscating their merchandise and carts because of a legal technicality outlawing the sale of merchandise on the streets of LA.   This painting was a protest against the police activities and the LA City Council eventually changed the law, allowing the sale of tamales, paletas, etc. on the streets of LA!! –Frank Romero

The Arrest of the Paleteros (ice cream vendors) is the third in a series of
Frank Romero’s political paintings to be made into a serigraph. The original painting is in the private collection of Cheech Marin and was featured in Chicano Visions and
accompanying catalogue which has been shown in major museums throughout the
United States. The long awaited publication of this image is being produced by
Richard Duardo/Modern Multiples, who was also the publisher of Romero’s well- known serigraph, The Closing of Whittier Boulevard. The silkscreen is printed in approximately 36 colors, the paper size is 30.5” x 46” and the colors will are hand separated and the print is hand pulled.
20 units have been set aside for a very special pre-publication offer to the public
at $850 each. This discount applies only to the first 20 prints to be sold before the official release. The opening list price will be $1600 and the price will be increased incrementally.
